10 Songs That Date You, But Who Cares, We Still Love Them

The other day, during a long car trip, I had the radio set to the oldies station and a lot of the songs they were playing were from the 80s and 90s…ouch.
My 13-year old was impressed that I knew the words of most of the songs, while my inquisitive 8-year old kept asking what year each song came out in, bewildered that it was “so, so, so long ago,” sigh.
There are many songs from my youth that I love deeply. I know that admitting this out loud totally dates me, but who cares, right? The fact is that our music was so darn remarkable and the diversity of it made it even more rocking.
Here are only 10 of my all-time favorite songs they got to hear during that trip:

  1. Forever Young by Alphaville

With the right attitude, we certainly can be forever young.

  1. In My life by The Beatles

If my life had a theme song, this would be it.

  1. Don’t You (forget about me) by Simple Minds

Oh, the Breakfast Club, such a life-changing time for me and my friends.

  1. Shoop by Salt-n-Pepa

My 90s jam song…oh, yea!

  1. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler

Ok, if you didn’t belt this out every time it came on, then are you even from the 80s?

  1. Linger by The Cranberries

This song just gets all your emotional juices flowing.

  1. Eternal Flame by The Bangles

Everything about this song is perfect. Just close your eyes and listen to it.

  1. Misunderstanding by Genesis

Even after 38 years after it’s release, this song is still so cool to me.

  1. I Need to Know by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

This song represents everything I love about rock’n’roll.

  1. Landslide by Stevie Nicks

Such a beautiful acoustic song about growing older and the changes we all experience in ife. Relevant now more than ever.
So, during that long car trip, my kids got a handful of music from my era, music from the heart, music that inspires, music that will be around for a long time, and music that they already love too. They sure have good taste.
What’s your favorite “oldies” song?

I remember the first time I started hearing 80’s songs on KEARTH (the oldies station of Southern California) and I gasped. The GO GOs on Kearth? WHAT? The Stray Cats? The Police? My 13 year old recognizes certain songs from animation and kid movies, renditions, covers…”Oh, I know that momma…it is on Glee.”
