The Good Life Begins at 50

As a blogger in my 40s I follow many blogs and Instagrams of women who are in their 50s and 60s and #agingpositively. They are my source of inspiration and guidance into what to expect during the next couple of decades in life as I aim to age the best way I can.

The good life begins at 50

A recurring theme that I see over and over (and that makes me quite happy) is that the “good life begins at 50.” It’s a sentiment that is prevalent and despite the increased risk of illness and physical limitations, it seems women in their 50s worry less, accentuate the positives more, and feel happier than they’ve ever been.

So, while life begins at 40, it seems, the “good” life begins at 50 and I can’t wait to get there.

I’m 47 and have to admit that it’s been a great decade so far because a lot of things have come together for me. I know myself better and am more comfortable in my own skin. I have definitely become more focused on what I want out of life and how to go about getting it. So, all this got me thinking, what is it about being in your 50s that makes you all of a sudden feel like the good life has started?

Here’s what I believe:

Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age

Victor Hugo’s wise words certainly ring true. Talk about perspective.

In our 40s we may still be trying to hold on to our youth a little too hard

Whereas in our 50s we realize that trying to hold onto youth is pointless and perhaps even shaming. In my early 40s this played out with the shoes I wore – part of me wanting to wear my entirely impractical, overly-uncomfortable six-inch stilletos, and the other part of me begging to just go with the comfy shoes. Sigh!

50-year old women today are mature but maintain a young attitude on life

This is reflected in their image, how they carry themselves, and how they relate to others.

As we embark on a new year, I hope you are able to look forward to all the great possibilities that your future Rocking Over 50 self holds.
