'The Challenge' is here again, and though you might have thought this site, ROCKING OVER 40, is dead and unloved - the love is back! The RPM Challenge is here, and if there is anyone left in the R/40 Community, the challenge is once again passed on to you as a torch of inspiration - lets get out there and ROCK people. Sign up, write, record, mix master and mail your brilliant CD to the RPM head quarters at the end of Feburary and you can be part of the ongoing movement of that which is the RPM Challenge!
Come on down one and all if you are in Montreal! Les Minots - 3812 St. Laurent - June 25th

Well strangely enough it seems there may be positive consequences to listening to your amplifier at 11 for hours on end. A recent publication in Harvard's Journal of Neurological Studies has discovered an unexpected correlation between listening to loud music over prolonged periods of time and significant gains in an individual's IQ. The 25 year study looked at over 125,000 musicians, specifically those who played louder styles of music such as Rock, Metal, Punk etc... Individuals were studied for a 10 to 20 year period. Participants were followed from their 20's (or younger) and tested repeatedly throughout their careers as musicians. Although they showed a decreased ability to hear well, as the musicians aged they significantly improved in cognitive, spatial and critical thinking tests.
"The results were really quite amazing", Dr. Simon Vanderhoof, the project's head researcher stated. "Despite the exceedingly loud music, alcohol and repeated drug abuse that the participants subjected themselves to, we found strong evidence that our participants actually became smarter over time". He continued, "Many of the participants eventually ended up becoming valuable contributions to society. Although they did not completely forsake their Rock'n'Roll tendencies, many ended up with jobs, and in fact some individuals attained very affluent professions within society such as doctors, judges, professors and politicians!"
Attempts to recreate these same results with mice have not been as successful. "We are having a hard time teaching them to play guitar" Dr. Vanderhoof concedes. "Regardless, this is good news for Rockers all around the world. Turn up your guitar and let your ears bleed."
Thanks again to the hard working crew at RPM http://rpmchallenge.com

A little retrospective to all those aging punkers out there. This is The Bags -- "Survive" (Live in Portland, OR).
This retrospective is in part based on a new book looking at the origions of punk by Jon Savage,
"Domino is proud to announce the release of Black Hole, a compilation celebrating the first wave of California Punk that briefly flourished between 1976 and 1980. Compiled by esteemed writer Jon Savage, Black Hole will be released on November 15th 2010. This compilation contains ideas, anti-establishment rants, sharp comments about the world, attempts at transcendence and plenty of savage wit. Featuring The Dead Kennedys, The Germs and The Zeros, the collection of tracks on this album sound as fresh as the day they were recorded"
If anyone has any stories we would love to hear them!
Hey everyone. Well Labor Day is officially past and its time to get active on the Rocking OVer 40 scene once again. Hope all of you people had great summers and some good jams, I sure did. The West Coast, as always, was a blast and I have since come home to Montreal to rock it here. We hope to start up a new live event in October or November - for members that are close to Montreal send us an email and let us know if you would like to join us as one of the R/40 event bands. We usually have 4 to 5 acts and play late into the night. There will also be some changes to the site soon and we will keep you updated as the functions and format change. Untill then keep the music, posts and inspiration coming! If you have any summer stories please share them with us.
